Reimagining a classic Japanese tale through experimental type & paper stock

This publication is a reinterpretation of the story In the Woods Beneath the Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom by Ango Sakaguchi. Based on the ISTD Open-Close brief, it re-illustrates the first and last chapters of a text out of copyright.

Through typographic experimentation, gradients and layering, the project focuses on unveiling the concept of hidden dangers and truths within beauty. Colour and Rakusui washi paper was used to subtly embody the motif of cherry blossoms, which is a key representation of deception, transcience of life and the uncanny. The simple and harmless design acts as a misleading facade, inviting the audience to be surprised by a weighty narrative that delves deep into the human condition.

Colour and Rakusui washi paper was used to subtly embody the motif of cherry blossoms, which is a key representation of deception, transcience of life and the uncanny. “Rakusi” which translates to dropping water, describes the process in which droplets were sprayed before the wood pulp of the paper was fully dried. although traditionally useed for lanterns and fusumas (traditional sliding door).

This textured as the opening and closing doors of the tale, as well as to add a textural and tactile experience for the reader.
