A video and social media campaign to break the stigma of female imprisonment

Script writing · Image making · Storytelling

This university group project involved creating a video and visuals for a not-for-profit organisation the Women’s Justice Network. The aim was to highlight how the organisation improves the status and wellbeing of women in prison through their mentoring program.

The video illustrates the reality of an unequal justice system that lacks mental and financial support, introducing the significant impact of WJN to draw the interest of new funders. As part of team N-light, my role was to create illustrations to encapsulate the idea of female prisoners as ‘real people’ entangled in the criminal justice system. I also contributed to script writing, conceptualisation, storyboarding, pitch presentation, research and the creation of process GIFs.

By sharing our process with our client on a weekly basis, we were able to improve the project through direct discussion, successfully handing over the final outcome that was used for their 2023 Xmas Appeal event.

Starting from pen to paper sketches, a diverse imagery of women was brainstormed. The idea was to depict these women as non-specific, to be inclusive of the diverse backgrounds of the demographic. Images were later scanned in and image traced for smoother linework, to be included in the video and social media posts.

Style frames were created using simple graphic shapes and type to highlight key words and statistics within the script.
