A type-based publication about typography

Photography · Typesetting · Book binding

Inspired by the historic Rocks in Sydney, Tinge magazine explores cityscapes through experimental type, typesetting and photographic textures. As a part of the brief, this university project required 2 articles about typography to be included within the publication and shape the overall concept.

This issue delves into how wandering allows the discovery of small wonders that are often overlooked - encapsulated by the play on words wanderlust and ‘wanderlost’ on the cover. Edited photographs of signage lettering, mossy and corroded patterns were incorporated to encompasse how a place continues to ‘grow’ as infrastructure and nature forge together throughout time.

Through this multi-media print magazine, I had the chance to explore the distortion of type and imagery, creating visuals that linked with the core concept.

As part of the research process, photos of signage lettering and building surfaces were taken onsite. Inspired by the deteriorated man-made structures, I experimented with creating distorted type, editing the photos with Photoshop to include as supporting imagery in my publication.

Another key practice was using a mongramming machine to create patchy textured letters. Heated metal letters were pressed against a layer of transfer foil and a thin plastic sheet. Playing with chance, I adjusted the length and strength of the letter press to create different degrees of unevenness.
